In the world today there are approximately 19 million visually impaired children – 1.4 million of these children are totally blind. Too often, vision problems prevent kids from excelling in school, playing sports, or taking part in other activities that their sighted peers take for granted.

Through direct ORBIS support over the last decade alone, more than 4 million children have received medical or refractive error treatments, while 170,000 have received sight improving surgeries. The impact for these children, their families and communities is profound, especially when sight restoration allows for full integration into social and economic activities.

With your gift, ORBIS will create a network of Kids Sight Centres in the developing world where there is a pressing need for dedicated pediatric eye care services. Our goal is a systematic reduction of childhood blindness.

A Typical ORBIS KIDS SIGHT CENTER

Although each Center will be modified based on its location and adapted to meet the local needs, they will share several common features, including:

·       CHILD-FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE: A brightly colored waiting area, private facilities for children and other family members, individual examination rooms and child-sized furniture will be key features of Kid Sight Centres. These elements contribute to an environment that enhances the dignity of the patient and ensures privacy and confidentiality.

·       EQUIPMENT, INSTRUMENTATION, MEDICATION: ORBIS will outfit each Center with essential tools and medicines needed to diagnose and treat a full range of childhood eye conditions. A healthcare technology management program will ensure that all donated equipment is well-maintained. Refractive correction facilities will be included in Kids Sight Centres so that children can receive prescription eyeglasses onsite.

·       INTEGRATED, CONNECTED: Each Kids Sight Center will be housed inside a comprehensive eye hospital or a general hospital and have access to operating rooms, laboratories, imaging services and safe anesthesia. When necessary, ORBIS will help our partner institutions upgrade existing equipment and ophthalmic care units, such as the operating room, benefitting patients of all ages. In a dedicated computer room, Center staff will have on-demand access to the highest-level medical experts through Cyber-Sight, our telemedicine initiative. By linking the Centres through Cyber-Sight, ORBIS will make the best care available to all patients.

Your gift to the ORBIS Kids Sight Centres program will save more children from a lifetime of needless darkness and despair. Please help us eliminate avoidable childhood blindness by making a donation now
